Where to Stay in San Francisco

The best area depends on how you reach the bridge and what else you plan. Here are four areas compared by location and transit, with Muni and bus fares for 2026.

Four areas to base yourself

No part of San Francisco is a few steps from the bridge, so the useful question is how you get there. The Marina, Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square and the Presidio each suit a different kind of trip. This page describes locations and transit links. It does not list hotels, room prices or availability.

The guide is independent. Prices change with the season and the day, so check rates and fees such as parking with the property before you book.

What each area is like

Pick by how you want to travel.

Marina

The Marina sits on the northern shore near the Palace of Fine Arts. Bus 28 links it with the southern bridge area. That is a location fact, not a verdict on safety or price.

Fisherman's Wharf

The wharf is the shore base for bay cruises. The 60 and 90 minute cruises leave from Pier 43½, and the Alcatraz ferry leaves separately from Pier 33. Muni 28 runs from Powell and Beach via the Marina to the bridge. Alcatraz island visits are cancelled from 26 October to 18 November 2026. See the bay cruise guide.

Union Square

Union Square has many places to stay. Powell Street offers BART, Muni and cable cars. Do not assume a direct rail link to the bridge from here. Plan on a bus or a ride.

Presidio

The Presidio is a park area with views toward the Marin Headlands, the Pacific and the bridge. The view is not the same from every room, so do not book on the assumption of one.

Getting to the bridge by bus

Fares and routes as published in 2026.

Muni line 28

Line 28 runs between Daly City BART and Fisherman's Wharf and stops at the Golden Gate Bridge parking lot. It runs daily from 5 a.m. to midnight. Buses come about every 12 minutes on weekdays, every 15 minutes on weekends and every 20 minutes late in the evening.

Muni fares

Adults aged 19 to 64 pay $2.85 with Clipper or a card, or $3 in cash, valid for 120 minutes. Seniors 65 and older and riders with a disability pay $1.40 electronically or $1.50 in cash. Regular Muni service is free for riders up to 18. Cable cars cost extra. Muni lists an end to single-ride tickets in MuniMobile from 1 September 2026, so tap a card or use Clipper instead.

Golden Gate Transit

Lines 101 and 120 use the Civic Center corridor, with the toll plaza as a transfer point. Line 120 replaced lines 130 and 150 on 12 April 2026, and the newest timetable overview runs from 13 September 2026. Older web pages can still show the old numbers.

Transit fares

Within San Francisco, an adult pays $6 in cash or $4.80 with Clipper or a contactless bank card. Youth aged 5 to 18, seniors 65 and older and riders with a disability pay $3. The zone to Sausalito costs $9 in cash or $7.20 electronically for adults.

If you have a car

Check this before you choose.

Ask each property about parking and fees before booking, since parking costs are different from hotel to hotel. At the bridge, the Welcome Center lot charges $5 per hour with a limit of 3 hours, and it has few spaces. See the parking guide. Do not leave valuables in a parked car, because car break-ins are a known problem.

Southbound crossings into the city have a toll. A two-axle vehicle pays $10.25 to $11.25 in 2026, depending on how you pay. See the toll guide.
